Stop Itch!
Apart from fleas, one of the most common causes of itchy skin for your dog is related to poor coat maintenance.
Next to itching comes scratching which breaks down the healthy skin barrier. This allows bacteria, yeast, and parasites to penetrate and flourish. It also dries out the skin which makes it even more itchy. So they get even more infections and often need even more expensive treatments if you let it wait.
Regular grooming is your first and best defence against persistent itching and scratching.
The itching can be caused by pollens, dirt, and dander that stay and get matted in your dog’s coat. If left long enough they will start to irritate your dog’s skin, causing your dog to scratch, chew and bite at the irritation.
The best way to prevent and manage the itch is to brush your dog’s coat on a daily basis. Brushing your dog daily will help prevent the build-up that can lead to itching problems.
Not only will regular brushing prevent a bout of the ‘scratchies’, your precious pup will love the time spent with their favourite person, it’s a great way to bond.
Bathing your dog is an excellent way to prevent your dog from developing an itching problem as well, but be aware that over washing your dog can have the opposite effect. Too much water and shampoo can strip your pup of the oils that are naturally found on the their skin. When these natural oils are stripped away the dog’s skin dries out and becomes more prone to infections.

Dry skin in dogs can be just as painful and itchy as it is to a human with a similar condition, and dogs cannot rub lotion on themselves!
If, despite your best efforts, your dog continues to scratch it could be the sign of a more serious problem and you should consult your Vet as soon as possible.
